This morning's Chronicle reported that Gary Payton II wore his dad's retired jersey (No .20) for his last home game at OSU. That, along with the realization that yesterday's game might well have been the final time Jaylen and Ivan took the floor at Haas Pavilion, had me thinking about their legacy at Cal.
Cal mens' basketball has five retired jerseys, no? Imhoff, KJ, Kidd, Lamond and Grigsby. There might be someone else, but I can't recall who.
Here's the question: What do you think the standard should be for retiring a jersey of a Cal basketball player? Jaylen and Ivan in particular. If Jaylen and Ivan turn pro and join Shareef as "one and done " guys, is there any circumstance under which you think their jerseys should be retired? Shareef did not get that honor (I'm pretty sure), but his team did not go deep into the Tournament. What if this Cal team made the Final Four? Won the NC? (Not that I think that will happen.) Is that enough to qualify a "one and done" guy for a jersey retirement?
Cal football set the bar as high as you can set it. No. 12, and that is IT. But Cal basketball is not that exclusive. .What do you think? Kidd was only at Cal for two years, and he never got past the Sweet 16. I know it's a bit premature, but do these guys have a shot at it, or should it be ruled out?
