Don't know if anyone caught the Minny-Mizzou game on NYD, but I think it was Ed Cunningham doing the game who was talking about Minny HC Jerry Kill's philosophy on a four-year program re-build. Here's what he said in broad strokes:
Year 1: Start with improving on Special Teams
Recruit a bunch of athletes and put them on Special Teams to gain some experience.
Year 2: Build the Defense
After the young players on Special Teams have gained some experience, put those guys on defense.
Year 3: Establish the run.
After a couple years in a college S&C program, your OL should be ready to go.
4. Develop a passing game
You now have a D, a running game, and have found your QB after 3-4 classes. Your D and OL should be mostly upperclassmen, and by now you should have better offensive skill personnel.
This made and makes a great deal of sense to me. Anyone ever heard Dykes articulate his re-building philosophy or step-by-step process year over year or otherwise?
