Best part of the whole event was the battle of the bands after the game in front of maples, and Cal band "serenading" the Furd cheerleaders with the song "Fat bottom girls make the rocking world go round". Awesome!
Regarding the game, effing pathetic. Coaching, players, and refs. Especially coaching.
Shocky, I got my dumb azz off the couch and brought a huge contingent to the game trying to get them into Cal hoops, and they were bored stiff. Not a great way to get repeat customers.
4 rants:
1. Cuonzo's offense today relied way too much on isolation, 1:1 play, and lots and lots of back court dribbling. I'm hopeful that this crap is because he doesn't have his players yet, but if this is the offense he's going to run for as long as he's at Cal, count me out. This is really the best sets you can run after a week off? Getting out-coached by dawkins is unacceptable imo.
The only saving grace in this game was Kravish was a monster (on all that isolation 1:1 crap, he was bailing out Cuonzo's clogged toilet offense). Towards the end of the 1st half, I looked at the scoreboard, and next to #45 were a bunch of points, and then every other guy on the court had a big fat zero next to their number. ugh. The coaching staff needs to do better. If i'm Rabb watching this crap, I'm not enthused.
2. The refs were way too involved. Let the kids play. I'm sure part of the problem is the way Cal plays defense, they don't move and reach a bunch. But still, unless the slap negatively impacts play, just let it go. I'm not saying this as a Cal fan but as a fan of hoops.
3. Free throws....50% for the game for Cal. ugh.
4. Singer....shoot the damn ball. dude is afraid which is sad seeing what he did when Cal went on a winning streak.
Besides Kravish, I liked how Cuonzo really is actively coaching the team, working up a huge sweat. Unfortunately what he was coaching was either poor strategy or not getting through to the kids.
