As most people know, I've been a pretty big Dykes supporter. And though he still has several games to extract himself from the hole he's dug the last two games, no sane person believes Dykes will finish this season better than 0-12 against UCLA, USC, Oregon, and Stanford at this point, and that, is cause for dismissal.

Before anyone bellyaches about how Dykes has turned around this and that, let's be honest. Cal, and that means Dirks, is responsible for the culture change in the program. Cal's administration told Dykes to clean up the academic act of the team, and change the culture. Let's not pretend Dykes insisted on higher academic performance from football players on his own. The truth is Dykes and Franklin had an amazing opportunity to really prove themselves as big-time coaches, and they have failed to get it done. It sucks, because I like both guys, but does anyone really believe that if the Cal job was open today, that Dykes would be the best available option?

That in mind, it's time to start looking at other candidates, and open up the wallet to get a good one. Obviously Justin Fuente (Memphis) and Tom Herman (Houston) are the cool flavors of the month. But don't sleep on the Temple head coach, Matt Rhule either. He's had NFL coaching experience, and is a defensive-minded coach. In three years, he's taken Temple from 2-10 to now 7-0, with a game at Notre Dame this week.

Other guys to look at????
