Mike Williams - athletic.director@berkeley.edu
Here’s his quote (which was published yesterday by the Mercury News):
In an interview last month, Williams said of Dykes, "I couldn't ask for any more from him right now." That evaluation wasn't restricted to football matters. He praised Dykes for turning around the program's embarrassing academic performance in the years before he arrived.
"We still have big donors, big football alums, who say 3-9 and 95-percent graduation rate trumps Rose Bowl," Williams said then. "Sonny is accomplishing that. He's on his way to a good record.
"The thing we're most proud about, the thing that's most important, is the academics. He's getting us there.”
This is a horribly upsetting statement by our AD. Does he not understand that academic and athletic excellence are not mutually exclusive? Has he seen what Stanford has been doing the past 8 years? By sharing that quote from a donor, he’s endorsing this view. I’m literally sick after reading this. I’m lucky enough to have been invited to the Chancellors box for the ASU football game in two weeks and will share my views with him personally. In the interim, I would ask if you feel the same way to send a note to the AD at the address above.
I can’t imagine donating more money or buying more season tickets if our goal is to go 3-9 with strong academic performance.
Here’s a template if you want to be really quick: (Please forward this to all fellow Cal fans)
Dear Mike,
I was thoroughly disappointed to read your quote in the Mercury News on Monday. As a passionate fan who gives my time, money and heart to Cal football, to learn that our major donors and our athletic director are not striving for excellence both athletically and academically is deeply troubling. It’s impossible to imagine my continued support without a clear and unwavering commitment from Cal’s athletic department to strive for the highest levels of achievement both on and off the field of play. And if significant members of our donor base truly espouse the value of mediocrity and complacency, than I would urge the athletic department to work hard to replace such persons contributions and omit their voice from any discussions on the future of Cal football,
Sincerely,
XXXX
