I urge everyone here to share their thoughts on the situation with the key players:
First, please send a note to Cuonzo letting him know how much you support him - send email to bearbackers@berkeley.edu (they will forward the notes to him)
Next, send Janet Napolitino, Nicholas Dirks and Mike Williams a note:
Janet - president@ucop.edu
Dirks - chancellor@berkeley.edu
Williams - athletic.director@berkeley.edu
Here's the note I sent to the three folks above:
Chancellor Dirks,
I'm a Cal alum, class of '89 and a huge supporter of my alma mater both academically and athletically. I'm a 25 year season ticket holder and donor to Cal's Mens basketball program and it is with regard to this program that I write to you today.
I've personally known each and every head coach that Cal has hired to run our basketball program over the last 30+ years and without a doubt the highest integrity individual to have that role is our current Coach Cuonzo Martin. While I'm severely disappointed with the actions of his assistant who was terminated last week, I've read the redacted report that was shared publicly and fully support Coach Martin's handling of the situation. Given the report took months to generate, the fact that Coach Martin is now being separately investigated strikes me as both unnecessary and short sighted. The individual who was affected by Coach Hufnagel's behavior was not forthcoming of details when she first reached out and upon learning those details he took immediate and proper steps. Balance his actions and forthrightness with the University as a whole when faced with far more dire and persistent accusations against two of our tenured professors.
If Coach Martin's situation is not dealt with immediately, we will lose the services of a tremendous coach and representative of Cal. Our program will be set back several years and using myself and dozens of my friends as examples, the donor and season ticket base's support will be materially compromised. More over, our confidence and respect for the institution as a whole will be damaged.
Sincerely,
XXX
