Veasy is here, Jaylinn Hawkins is soon to come, interesting stuff here about the route tree:

On him and D-Rob having a bit of a competition to see who can stay on the field the longest

I wouldn’t say that. Me and D-Rob actually coalesce with each other real well. I’m an older guy, he’s a younger guy, there’s things that he needs help on just like I need help on. So when he sees me doing extra stuff, I feel like that’s an opportunity for him to get better and with me too. Really not a competition, we love getting a lot of work in and really just honing in and getting our skills down to a perfect T, so it’s not a competition.

Tell us a little bit about the linemen coming into the receiver’s territory, catching punts

That was big, that was a surprise too. We were like, all getting ready to play the game or last drive for a gasser, that’s what we were thinking. So when we’re seeing them bring out the punt machine, we were like ‘oh, ok,’ so got the big guys out there. We were confident though, we were confident. With the three we picked, we were like these three can get it done

So the offense had to vote on who they wanted out there?

Actually, no it was all random, but coach Wilcox picked them and we were like ‘ok, we’ve got trust in these guys,’ so it was all random. I thought we had the upper hand on the defense with the picks.

Who were your three?

We had Addy. Addy kinda got the short end of the stick because he was the first one to catch one, he didn’t really get the projection of the ball, so he didn’t really know. We had Pat Mekari and last Jake Curhan, and they both came through for us, they did pretty good, looked natural/

Who’d the defense have?

Chinedu, didn’t do so good, he dropped his, Rusty Becker, and who did they have first? He caught it, I don’t remember who the first one was (Chris Palmer), he did catch it though, but the last two they failed.

On Chinedu’s drop

"I guess he wasn't paying attention to the guys ahead of him," Veasy noted, "because he tried to catch the ball over the head, so I guess he had a mental lapse there. But that's not his job on a day to day basis, so we'll let him pass"

On Coach Baldwin’s offense being somewhat seamless for WRs no matter who’s behind the center

Yeah, really that’s all it is, whoever we’re getting the ball from, it’s there every time. It’s all about timing. It’s, really no matter who it is throwing the ball, it’s the system, and we’re doing good in that system, so whoever we’re rotating in receiver-wise, quarterback, lineman-wise, it’s like we’re all on the same accord, same page, and that’s a compliment to coach Baldwin’s offensive, it is very relatable. Everybody can just be plugged in, go here, go there.

On the Route Tree

Lot different because we’re actually running a lot more routes. We got the entire route tree, stuff that’s gonna prepare us for the next level, things like that. So we’ve got a lot of complex routes, stuff where it’s more heady, got to know mental stuff. You’ve got to know how to set a guy up, know your certain steps, know how to break down this and that, very technique based and technique honed, because you have to have technique in order to run them.

How much does it help to have Edwards, who has done this before?

Great, having somebody who’s been there, that’s huge. Having somebody who’s actually been in that position and helping us to be what we need to be in growth every day, and it’s good because he’s a younger guy. He relates to us, we can talk to him, stuff like that, so it’s been all along good. It’s been really good, the receiver room is gelling really nice, everybody is here for everybody you know. Everybody is just taking the next step every day, getting better and perfecting the craft.

Are you guys asked to block more than a year ago?

We actually blocked a lot last year, I played inside moreso, me, I had a lot of screens. But we are blocking more, I think I’ll be able to answer that question better once we actually play a game to see coach Baldwin’s playcalling style. We’re a balanced offense, so we are gonna have to block, those are things that we’re gonna have to do. We’ll see more when we’re in North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Thoughts on the fault line

I don’t know too much about it. They’ve told me little stuff about it, it’s cool. I like that they’ve put that in there. All that unique stuff that Under Armour did, I really like. It’s like they actually paid attention, brought detail to everything, that’s cool, so that’s always good.

What other stuff, like the Sather Stripe?

Yeah, the Sather Stripe, stuff like that you know, actually honing into what makes Berkeley what it really is. That’s a big part of it, a lot of people, you know me, I’m from the South so a lot of people don’t know too much about Berkeley, Berkeley’s a really special place, got a lot of rich history and stuff like that. So putting the details in, it really shows.

Any detail inside the uniforms that we haven’t seen?

I didn’t pay too much attention to it when we put them on, we have the Sather Stripe for sure. I really like the new uniforms, the new blue we have and everything, the color combinations, so I was actually excited when we got them. I actually give the Under Armour ones one up on the Nike ones.
