Always good to have Rick and Chris Childers take on Bears football.
Rick was very adamant that Goff is the best QB in college football and that will be proven out in the NFL draft. He said he's special in the way he moves (loosey goosey) in the pocket and his arm talent. Expects him to improve a lot given the talent around him on offense. Rick thinks he will "explode on the national scene" when we play Texas at Austin.
Dykes gave an okay interview. He's always articulate and has opinions but doesn't have the strongest presence or sense of gravitas when interviewed. Talked about going to Texas and how important that will be for the team but said they can't sleep on a very well coached SDSU team the week before (trap game given it's not the opener).
Said Goff has made a bigger jump since the end of last season to now than in his first two years. Went to another level in Spring ball. Childers and Rick pushed hard on the defense with Dykes with Childers saying he's a huge fan of Art Kaufmann and believes his track record speaks for itself. Dykes said that year two with AK will be helpful but biggest thing is that the depth of talent they have going into 2015 on defense is miles ahead of where they were two years ago and way ahead of last year. We will reach the 2nd half of the season and still be able to play scholarship players instead of walk ons. Kids played hard but they weren't ready to play at P12 level. Good mix of depth and experience in the front seven (16 DLineman and 10 LBs we can win with) good depth in the secondary but not ideal experience. We will rely on JC kids more than would be ideal. That said, "We expect to make a big jump this year (on defense)"
Dykes said what sets the Pac 12 apart is that the bottom 4th of the conference are way superior than anyone else's bottom quarter. So many good coaches and players. No easy wins. They asked Sonny about the grad transfer rule. He said it's a tough issue but he'd like to see at a minimum that it's not allowed between conference teams.
After Dykes left, they analyzed the Bears and basically Rick said they don't need to improve much on defense to make this a successful season but Childers in particular is worried whether we can given how terribly awful the defense has been the past two years. Rick said he was happy that Dykes was having success getting JC kids into Cal.
