The Dykes contract removes any remaining doubt and makes this conclusion irrefutable: Cal gives not a flying f*ck about winning.
It's now in writing for all to see: If he goes 7-5 and the team has a 980 APR, the head coach is employed for life. At $2.8 million per year, who the hell wants to give up that gig? And why the hell would you push yourself to do more when other jobs that pay more require much more performance and come with much more pressure?
You get to sit back in your easy chair knowing you've got it made at Cal for life even if you win less than half your conference games! What the hell message does this send to recruits who want to win? Fans who might consider ESP seats?
Forget what I said about the extension meaning nothing for recruiting purposes because everyone knows Dykes is looking to get out and if the buyout is low, he can be gone any time. Now the extension means nothing because every other coach can question recruits with "do you really want to go a place where they don't care about winning?"
Even if the buyout is $3 million or less, it's hard to believe Dykes won't be able to get to 7-5 wins enough times to be Cal's coach for the next 20 years. Given this embracing of mediocrity, I wonder, will any of you "die hards" now finally just throw in the towel and stop caring completely, like Cal has made clear it doesn't care? Or are you going to remain a passionate Cal fan knowing you have virtually zero chance of ever seeing a conference championship in your lifetime, because your school doesn't value winning like you do?
