As for Cal's present state of affairs, sure, coach Sonny Dykes needs to recruit better players on defense. You could also make the case that he should consider some staff changes. But one of the complications he can't talk about is how the cash-strapped athletic department isn't anteing up for competitive salaries.
Want an A-list defensive coordinator? You need to pay him close to $750,000 to $1 million, particularly when you factor in the Bay Area cost of living. When your staff is getting paid less than those of Central Florida, Rutgers and Virginia (2015 numbers) in the most expensive area of the country, you are working from a deficit position.
Not saying this money focus is very Berkeley, one of he nation's great -- and wonderfully quirky -- academic institutions. But it is real when you're talking football.
