Cal offers Nebraska transfer QB Chubba Purdy

Missed this one yesterday but Cal has jumped in with an offer to Nebraska transfer QB Chubba Purdy. There's some very obvious family connections to the Bay Area, so it is an intriguing one for the Bears. TCU and North Texas are his two other announced offers since entering the portal a few days ago.

He will have two seasons of eligibility at his next stop. He played in 12 games (4 starts) completing 50% of his passes (53-105) for 529 yards, 2 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. The Arizona native also ran for 53 yards and 3 TDs combined over the last two seasons.

MBB game thread: Cal vs. Washington State

Cal (6-12, 2-5 Pac-12 | last game: 77-75 loss vs. Washington) vs. Washington State (13-5, 4-3 | last game: 82-75 win at Stanford)

When: Saturday, Jan. 20 | 2:00 p.m. PST
Where: Haas Pavilion | Berkeley, California
TV: Pac-12 Network | Roxy Bernstein (PxP) & Don MacLean (Analyst)
Radio: 810 AM & The Varsity Network App | Justin Allegri (PxP) & Theo Robertson (Analyst)

Cal continues its three-game homestand Saturday afternoon against Washington State after coming away from its matchup against the Huskies with a loss after a Washington buzzer-beater. The Cougars are looking to continue their win streak in the Bay after defeating Stanford earlier this week. As Cal is looking for momentum after a number of close losses, this is an important game for the Bears, especially before they take on Stanford a week from today.

Follow along for updates and join the conversation throughout the matchup at Haas Pavilion — and apologies for the delay in getting this posted.

QB's in the portal

Due to the recent upheaval at Washington and Univ of Arizona, a couple of QB's are leaving, or decommitting.
Class of '25 UW commit Jackson Kollock is decommitting from Washington. Cal was reported to be one of the schools who contacted him after
his announcement.

Freshman QB Brayden Dorman has announced he's entering the transfer portal. He was offered by Cal during his recruitment, but no idea if it progressed
very far. Fairly highly ranked in the class of 23, second ranked HS player in the state of Colorado. Just announced earlier today. No word on any contacts, yet.

Finally, Arizona QB Jayden DeLaura has found a new home at Texas State.

(All of this info was gathered from postings on Twitter, which I assume to be a public space. Can't completely attest to the accuracy, but usually it's from reputable outfits
that everyone would recognize, including Rivals. More often it's from the players themselves. )

ANOTHER transfer at wide receiver for the Bears, second this week after Mikey Matthews announced his commitment earlier this week. Like Matthews, Brady put up some solid numbers both as a receiver and on special teams; he had 39 catches for 621 yards and four receiving touchdowns as a true sophomore in 2023, alongside 117 kick return yards and 93 punt return yards.

Story coming shortly!

Cal defensive lineman Darius Long is declaring for the 2024 NFL Draft, he announced on X, formerly Twitter, Saturday. Long spent three seasons with the Bears after coming to Cal from the College of San Mateo.

Long played in nine games in 2021 as a junior and 11 games in 2022 before seeing action in seven games this past season.

He's the third Cal player to announce his intent to declare for this year's draft, with the others being wide receiver Brian Hightower and center Matthew Cindric. Linebacker Jackson Sirmon has not formally announced his intentions to declare, but made a post to suggest that he has done so.

The deadline to file the paperwork to declare is tomorrow, Monday Jan. 15.

Brian Driscoll moving on from football

This one was rumored already, but it looks like Brian Driscoll will be moving on from football after four years and three active seasons with the Bears, according to his Instagram. Driscoll redshirted his freshman year in 2019 and had one year of undergraduate eligibility remaining.

Driscoll started the 2022 and 2023 seasons at left guard before becoming Cal's starting center after Matthew Cindric was injured halfway through the 2022 season and in the Bears' first contest at North Texas this season. He earned Pac-12 Offensive Lineman of the Week twice in 2023, first after stepping in to fill Cindric's shoes Week 1, and again after Cal's 42-39 win against Washington State in Week 10. He started all of the Bears' games in the past two years after missing the latter half of his redshirt freshman year due to injury.

Earning his "claim to fame," Driscoll scored a touchdown after recovering a fumble against the Cougars — becoming the first Cal offensive lineman to score a touchdown since the NCAA began providing the statistic in 1992 — and appeared in the postgame press conference wearing his teammates' jewellery.

MBB game thread: Cal vs. Colorado

Cal (5-10, 1-3 Pac-12 | last game: 66-57 win vs. UCLA) vs. Colorado (11-4, 2-2 | last game: 76-73 loss vs. Arizona State)

When: Wednesday, Jan. 10 | 8:00 p.m. PST

Cal is back on the floor Wednesday night hosting Colorado, which is playing its third straight game on the road. The Buffs got a little taste of reality last week when they were swept by the Arizona schools. Like Cal, Colorado has been shorthanded quite a bit this season.

On the Bears' side, Mark Madsen's squad is coming off a key road victory over UCLA that helped the team earn a split on its final LA road trip.

Cal will be looking to keep that momentum going Wednesday night at Haas.

Top-60 transfer in the Rivals portal rankings and a four-star transfer as well.

Cal hosting some very intriguing transfer targets Wednesday-Thursday

WR Tyrin Smith (UTEP)

-123 catches for 1,800 yards and 12 TDs over the last three seasons. His best year was 2022, when he caught 71 passes for 1,039 yards and 7 TDs. He was limited to four games this season.
-One year of eligibility remaining.

RB Deion Hankins (UTEP)

-Has rushed for 2,604 yards and 23 TDs over five seasons, averaging 4.8 yards per carry. He's coming off a career year of 812 rushing yards (5.2 YPC) and 5 TDs.
-One year of eligibility remaining.

TE Michael Trigg (Ole Miss)

-Former Rivals100 prospect who spent one season at USC before transferring to Ole Miss. Has 28 catches for 330 yards and 5 TDs over parts of three seasons.
-I covered his initial recruitment and went out to see him play in Florida, and then saw him for his first year at USC, and he is a freakish athlete. Injuries are the main reason why the production hasn't been greater, but he is as dynamic as it comes at the TE spot.
-Was able to redshirt this season so still has two years of eligibility left.

OT Junior Uzebu (Vanderbilt)

-Limited to one game this season (not sure why) but was the full-time starter at left tackle last year, when he allowed 13 pressures and 2 sacks. Graded out at a 54.0 overall on PFF.
-Started his career at West Virginia, has one season of eligibility left.

EDGE Isaiah Hastings (Alabama)

-Former four-star Rivals250 prospect, played in one game over two seasons at Alabama.

LB Aiden Sullivan (Butte)

-6-2, 215-pound LB had 82 tackles, 3.5 sacks and an interception this season at the JUCO level.
-Two years of eligibility remaining.

K Ryan Coe (North Carolina)

-Has played at Delaware, Cincinnati and last season at UNC, making 48 of 61 field goals in his career, including 3 of 4 last season. His best year came in 2022 at Cincy, when he made 19 of 23 field goals.
