Commitment: Three-star WR Josiah Martin is headed to Cal

The Bears land their most prominent visitor of the weekend as Denton (Texas) Guyer receiver Josiah Martin announces his pledge to Cal at the end of his official visit. He was previously committed to Boston College and backed off that pledge early in the fall. It's a really important get for Justin Wilcox and Co. The likes of Alabama, Baylor, Tennessee, Michigan State, Oregon, Missouri and Utah all offered the 6-foot playmaker.

Mike Bloesch promoted to Cal OC

Cal is staying in-house for its OC with Mike Bloesch being promoted to offensive coordinator in addition to his duties running the offensive line.

Wilcox:

"Mike Bloesch has made a huge impact in his first season with our program, and we are excited to give him the opportunity to make an even greater impact moving forward," Wilcox said. "Mike has proven himself to be a versatile and skilled coach, as well as an excellent recruiter. It's easy to see why Mike has risen so quickly through the ranks to become one of the nation's top young coaches and recruiters."

Bloesch: "I'm excited about this opportunity and prepared for it," Bloesch said. "We have taken strides to becoming a great football program this season, and I can't wait to see what we can accomplish down the road. I want to win championships, and I want to win them at Cal."

UCLA stiffing?

Just read a post on the Cardboard that mentioned UCLA may have difficulty attracting transfers because of "horror stories about UCLA NIL deals leaving players stiffed."

Does anyone know about UCLA transfers getting stiffed out of promised NIL cash? Is this having a negative impact - as it should - on UCLA?

I really would rather not talk about USCLA from here on out given conference changes, but USCLA are still obviously going to be a recruiting foe for Calford, and I want them both to be hampered and suck as much as possible as always. Getting a rep for stiffing guys is a great way to suck in the future, so hoping it's true.

QB commit EJ Caminong comments on Spav leaving Cal

I caught up with 2024 Cal quarterback commit EJ Caminong tonight. He said he did not get any kind of a heads up from Jake Spavital about the move and only learned about it through social media when it was reported (gives you some insight into how much Cal's staff knew what was going on). The Seattle-based prospect said he immediately reached out to Marshall Cherrington for info and felt comfortable with what he was told about the situation moving forward.

"He caught me up and everything was good there," Caminong said. "The message is the same, they believe in me like they have from the beginning, and they also made sure that I’m in the loop on the OC search."

At this point, Caminong says though he has a good relationship with Spav, that is only part of the reason he committed to the Bears. He feels everything else that pushed him to make his decision remains in place, so at this point he has no plans of decommitting or looking around even. He is going to be paying close attention to the OC search but feels comfortable after listening to what Cherrington relayed to him.

So, for now, sounds like good news regarding one of the most important current commits. I'll have a full update with Caminong posted tomorrow.

Cal season prediction

It's time. Bad news for bears fans. I don't have cal having a successful season and as we know my predictions have been unfortunately right every single year.

at North Texas - I've been a cal fan a long time and a road non power 5 game has been a loss many more times than not. Can anyone think of the last non power 5 road win we've had? And wilcox loves to keep these games close. That being said North Texas is bad, so Cal wins I hope.

Auburn - Auburn is one of these teams that always surprises bad or good. Their team composite ranking is 18th which was shocking to me because usually it's top 10, but I still see a Cal loss here.

Idaho - Better be a Cal win.

at UW - Cal loss.

ASU - This series has a long history of the home team winning. If we lose this look out below. Cal wins.

Oregon State - Oregon State is just better. Huge coaching mismatch. Cal losses.

USC - Cal loss. Maybe we get a moral victory.

at Utah - Cal loss

at Oregon - Cal loss

WSU - Cal win. Though I could see this as the Wilcox shits the bed game he seems to have annually.

at Furd - Cal loss. I see a more motivated Furd team winning this one. Furd's going to be bad, but will we care?

at UCLA - Cal loss. Chip kelly own Wilcox.

4-8

My guess is we lose one of the asu, wsu, furd or north texas games. So I just picked the furd assuming a new coach might have them more motivated than cal.

The sad part is what's the best case scenario for cal? maybe we beat auburn and the furd and go 6-6?

Kekai Burnett decommits from Oregon State

2024 edge rusher Kekai Burnett has backed off his commitment from Oregon State today. He picked up an offer from Jonathan Smith and Michigan State yesterday but if the Hawaiian edge rusher doesn't want to go that far from home Cal is certainly a closer option. The Bears hosted him for an official visit in June and had been making a strong push prior to his decision.

2024 Riordan OL Kalolo Ta'aga taking OV to Cal this weekend

Riordan offensive tackle Kalolo Ta'aga will take his official visit to Cal this weekend. The 6-foot-7 converted basketball player has been on the rise this year and he's gained plenty of Power Five attention despite his lack of football experience before this season. Arizona and Utah have both hosted him on official visits this season. He was previously committed to San Jose State. There are certainly some expected raw elements to his game, but he has become a top priority for a handful of schools late in the cycle.

2024 S Isaiah Crosby planning visit to Cal

Hi guys, I’m doing some Pac-12 transfer portal coverage for Rivals. I was told by Jacey Zembal in our network that 2024 safety Isaiah Crosby of Trinity Valley C.C. is planning to visit Cal, Texas Tech, and NC State. Not sure of the dates. I’ll let Matt & Ryan figure that part out, but as of now he is planning to visit.

Los Angeles to Shreveport: Assessing Cal’s bowl game scenarios

After putting together a 6-6 regular season, Cal football is headed to a bowl game for the first time since facing Illinois in the 2019 Redbox bowl. Given that there are a number of Pac-12 teams that are bowl eligible — eight, to be exact — there are a few different bowl games that the Bears could end up appearing in.

The schedule for all games will be released on Selection Day, slated to begin at 12 p.m. on Dec. 3, with 82 teams participating in a bowl game alongside the College Football Playoff.

As rumors, projections and assumptions are flying around following the end to the regular season, here is a breakdown of what the Bears’ bowl game scenario might look like.

Column: Cal comes full circle as lights go out on Pac-12

Saturday’s 33-7 win against UCLA was a full circle moment for the Bears, in just about every sense of the word. An end to the Bears’ regular season. An end to the Pac-12. One final win over an old rival.

Cal fans can, and certainly should, celebrate, but this win is first and foremost for the players. And, oh how happy they looked. Cal head coach Justin Wilcox was thrown by first-year offensive coordinator Jake Spavital into a Gatorade shower, courtesy of Monroe Young and T.J. Session and was quite literally jumping with joy on the sideline following the win.

As the Bears become bowl eligible for the first time since 2019 and cap of their regular season with a three-game win streak, the Pac-12 saw its last-ever regular season game. There are a lot of things to reflect on right now, I tried to capture some of them.

Cal FB 2024 Schedule

After an exciting win versus the Bruins (and looking forward to a bowl game), I thought it might be useful to summarize what the 2024 Cal football schedule will look like next year (which will hopefully have 7 home games):

Non-conference:
  • 8/31 – UC Davis
  • 9/7 – at Auburn
  • 9/14 – San Diego State
  • TBD - 4th non-con opponent, likely a home game.

For conference play, based on the ACC schedule announced:
https://theacc.com/news/2023/10/30/acc-announces-future-conference-football-schedule-model.aspx

Home:
  • Miami (7-5, 3-5 in conference in 2023)
  • NC State (9-3, 6-2)
  • Syracuse (6-6, 2-6)
  • Furd (3-9, 2-7 in Pac-12)

Away
  • Florida State (12-0, 8-0)
  • Pitt (3-9, 2-6)
  • Wake Forest (4-8, 1-7)
  • SMU (10-2, 8-0 in AAC)

For ACC conference play, that means next year we get to face three teams (Syracuse, Pitt and Wake Forest) that had three of the four worst conference records this year in the ACC. And we only face two teams (Florida State and NC State) that had positive conference records this year in the ACC. We of course face Furd and SMU, who we'll have to see how they do in the transition to the ACC along with Cal.

Hopefully this means we can get a winning conference record in our first year in the ACC. Obviously, a lot needs to happen between now and then. For example, we clearly need NIL, transfer portal, and HS recruiting momentum.

2024 Texas OL Syris Corley visiting this weekend

Cal is bringing in 2024 offensive tackle prospect Syris Corley in for an official visit this weekend. The Bears offered the 6-foot-5 recruit from Taylor, Texas back in October so this will be a key late visit for him. Texas Tech, Purdue, North Texas, Houston, UTEP and Boston College are some of his other offers.

The Bears' big win over UCLA has brought a few honors to begin the week with linebacker Cade Uluave winning Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week, outside linebacker David Reese earning Defensive Lineman of the Week and running back Jaydn Ott winning Special Teams Player of the Week.
