Cal hosting some very intriguing transfer targets Wednesday-Thursday

WR Tyrin Smith (UTEP)

-123 catches for 1,800 yards and 12 TDs over the last three seasons. His best year was 2022, when he caught 71 passes for 1,039 yards and 7 TDs. He was limited to four games this season.

RB Deion Hankins (UTEP)

-Has rushed for 2,604 yards and 23 TDs over five seasons, averaging 4.8 yards per carry. He's coming off a career year of 812 rushing yards (5.2 YPC) and 5 TDs.

TE Michael Trigg (Ole Miss)

-Former Rivals100 prospect who spent one season at USC before transferring to Ole Miss. Has 28 catches for 330 yards and 5 TDs over parts of three seasons.
-I covered his initial recruitment and went out to see him play in Florida, and then saw him for his first year at USC, and he is a freakish athlete. Injuries are the main reason why the production hasn't been greater, but he is as dynamic as it comes at the TE spot.
-Was able to redshirt this season so still has two years of eligibility left.

OT Junior Uzebu (Vanderbilt)

-Limited to one game this season (not sure why) but was the full-time starter at left tackle last year, when he allowed 13 pressures and 2 sacks. Graded out at a 54.0 overall on PFF.
-Started his career at West Virginia, has one season of eligibility left.

EDGE Isaiah Hastings (Alabama)

-Former four-star Rivals250 prospect, played in one game over two seasons at Alabama.

LB Aiden Sullivan (Butte)

-6-2, 215-pound LB had 82 tackles, 3.5 sacks and an interception this season at the JUCO level.
-Two years of eligibility remaining.

K Ryan Coe (North Carolina)

-Has played at Delaware, Cincinnati and last season at UNC, making 48 of 61 field goals in his career, including 3 of 4 last season. His best year came in 2022 at Cincy, when he made 19 of 23 field goals.

Old Dominion running back Kadarius Calloway is the latest transfer pickup for the Bears. He was once rated as the No. 52 prospect in the 2021 recruiting class and signed with Alabama before going the junior college route. He never played at Alabama but did get on the field at both East Mississippi Community College and Old Dominion. He'll have one season of eligibility left at Cal.

In 2023, the 6-foot, 217-pound running back rushed for 623 yards and 5 touchdowns at Old Dominion. Connecticut, Coastal Carolina and Arkansas State are the offers Calloway announced after his entrance into the transfer portal.

Tufts University receiver Jaden Richardson announced his commitment to Cal this afternoon. The 6-foot-2 senior is from San Mateo and played at Menlo before making his way to the DIII school in Massachusetts. He has had a productive career at Tufts, and this season he finished up with 46 catches for 830 yards receiving and 13 touchdowns.

He went over 145 yards receiving in three games this season. He comes to Cal with 92 career catches, 1,564 yards receiving and 20 touchdowns in his career.

Richardson was able to gain quite a bit of traction in the portal with programs such as Washington, South Florida, Wisconsin, Iowa State, Central Florida and Utah all getting involved. The Bears are looking to retool the receiver group heading into next season and Richardson is a proven option (albeit at a lower level) who still has two seasons of eligibility left with the Bears.

Game thread: Cal vs. No. 4 Arizona

Cal (4-7 | last game: 71-67 win vs. UC San Diego) vs. No. 4 Arizona (9-2 | last game: 96-95 double OT loss vs. FAU)

When: Friday, Dec. 29 | 7:30 p.m. PST
Where: Haas Pavilion | Berkeley, California
TV: Pac-12 Network | Guy Haberman (PxP) & Don MacLean (Analyst)
Radio: 810 AM & The Varsity Network App | Justin Allegri (PxP) & Theo Robertson (Analyst)

Cal will look to snap a 13-game losing streak against Arizona as the Bears welcome the Wildcats to Haas Pavilion tonight in the first game of their final run through Pac-12 play. The Wildcats are coming off a double overtime loss to Florida Atlantic last week while the Bears took down UC San Diego back on Dec. 20.

Arizona shoots the ball well and is built around its offense, so Cal will need to show improved defensive play to pull off the upset. My preview of the matchup is at the link up top.

Cal QB Sam Jackson V enters the transfer portal

I've put this in the transfer tracker thread, but figure it is significant enough that it deserves to stand on its own as well. Cal quarterback Sam Jackson V has entered the transfer portal after one season with the Bears. He played in five games this year and passed for 556 yards and 5 touchdowns. He threw 2 interceptions and rushed for a touchdown and 59 yards in his appearances. Jackson, who transferred to Cal from TCU, ran into some injury issues later in the season.

This leaves the Bears with just one scholarship quarterback heading into the spring as EJ Caminong is not likely to arrive in Berkeley until the summer. Mike Bloesch and Justin Wilcox will have to address the position in the portal and there are certainly some intriguing options to bring in and compete with Fernando Mendoza.

Cal offseason assessment: QB

The pieces are starting to come together for the Bears in 2024. However, as Justin Wilcox recently mentioned, there is still much more work to be done and more roster turnover expected by the time training camp arrives. Still, it is a good time to reflect on the 2023 season while looking ahead to the spring and offseason as the Bears continue to build their next roster.

In Maria's latest article, the quarterback position is examined with Cal having a returning starter in Fernando Mendoza for the first time in a while. Still, the Bears have been active this offseason already by bringing in North Texas transfer Chandler Rogers while seeking out other options at the position.

It has the makings for yet another open competition in 2024, and Maria provides an overview of the situation at quarterback for the Bears.

Former Cal players heading to Bethune Cookman

This is cool ... as we know Raymond Woodie III is gonna go to Bethune Cookman, a HBCU in Florida. Woodie is gonna play for his dad who is the HC there. Now it looks like two former Cal Bears, Orin Patu and now Trey Paster will be joining him. They probably know a NFL career isn't in the cards for them but get to enjoy playing at a HBCU and getting additional certificates/degrees. I wish them nothing but the best. Hopefully they already got their Cal degrees before they transferred. Keep getting educated young men!

OL staff addition

Cal is bringing in Winterhawk Leighton to its offensive staff to help with the offensive line. He is coming to the Bears from Hawaii where he was a graduate assistant the last couple years. He was also a graduate assistant at Idaho State for a time. He's worked with the offensive line at his previous stops. A Washington native.

Craig Woodson announces return to Cal for 2024 season

Another key player is returning to Cal next season. Craig Woodson will finish out the final year of his collegiate career with the Bears after finishing this season third on the team with 79 tackles. He also had four pass breakups and a pair of forced fumbles. Woodson was only one of four defensive players to start all 13 games this year.
