Mark Madsen extension

As ESPN's Pete Thamel is reporting, Cal and Mark Madsen have reached an agreement on an extension that will keep him under contract with the Bears until 2029-30. Obviously, there is a job that is expected to be coming open soon that could have come into play, so this takes any of that pressure away.

Cal is just 13-18 entering this week's Pac-12 Tournament but has looked like a much better team in conference play and is in a much better spot than last season. The Bears will again have to retool the roster but Madsen has proved himself to be invested in the program and has made plenty of strides leading the team in his first season.

WATCH: Justin Wilcox, Jaydn Ott and Craig Woodson preview spring practice

A definite level of eagerness from Justin Wilcox today to get his team going next week. He spent just over 15 minutes with the media looking ahead to spring practice. On the positive side of things, Wilcox confirmed that both Trond Grizzell and Jack Endries have been put on scholarship after breakout seasons in 2023. Wilcox says the team took the "appropriate action" in awarding both players scholarships.

On the negative side, a number of players will not be available this spring including: Spencer Brien, Lu-Magia Hearns, Tyler Knape, Ieremia Ieremia, Myles Jernigan, Curlee Thomas, Frederick Williams, Myles Williams, Julian Womack. All those players will be out this spring.

Running back Byron Cardwell will be eased into practice but should be a full go by the spring game after a knee injury took away his season last year. Wilcox says there are numerous players who will be eased into things this spring meaning there are going to be quite a few opportunities for others to see the field in the next several weeks.

We'll have more on today's session throughout the weekend, and I will be back at practice Monday as things get going at CMS.

Lack of depth

While it is true that we lack depth, this shouldn’t be the excuse for important games. As an example St Mary’s, a program we are all envious of, played just 6 guys in the WACC championship game vs Gonzaga. Gonzaga played just 7 guys.

St Mary’s 6th man played just 13 minutes. (Fwiw, he’s a local (Piedmont) kid who was a walk-on and through years of development is now a solid contributor to St Mary’s)

Over the course of a season, depth matters, and playing a deeper group is the way you develop next season’s roster, if nothing else. But when it (the game) matters most, depth is less of a factor than we suggest.

My thoughts on tonight's Cal-Stanford MBB game + Cal baseball

My preview for tonight's game is here. Cal 80 Stanford 77 is my prediction. I don't expect Stanford to roll over and die, but Cal is the obvious pick here. The Cardinal have totally fallen apart. Jerod Haase almost certainly coaching his final game at Maples Pavilion.

Disrespect of Jared Goff Continues

First he wasn’t All-Pro this year and now ESPN picked the top 80 NCAA QBs since 2000 and he isn’t on the list (Rodgers is), a list that includes the likes of Matt Ryan, Joey Harrington, Zach Wilson, and Bailey Zappe. Goff was way better than those guys and others on the list. Sure Cal didn’t win a lot, but how many games would JT Barrett have won if his team had the worst defense in like history? I hope the Lions win it all this year and Goff finally gets his due. I’m a big fan. Great player, classy guy, easy to root for.

Recruiting changes coming to CFB

I asked Justin Wilcox about this recently, and he is a proponent of a summer signing period. That is not looking like it will take place this summer but the winter date is sounding very much like it will be moved up to early December to free up coaches at the end of the month. It's still not ideal but it will give coaches an opportunity to focus on the holidays, for one, and transfer players late in the winter.

Cal in pursuit of Rivals250 QB, TCU commit Ty Hawkins

Four-star 2025 QB Ty Hawkins has been committed to Sonny Dykes and TCU for a while, but he's continued to add interest and offers as of late. Cal jumped into the mix in late January and has continued to make a push for the Rivals250 prospect. Read more about his recruitment at the link up top in this story written by Marshall Levenson.

MBB Game Thread: Cal at Utah

Cal (13-16, 9-9 Pac-12) at Utah (17-11, 8-9)

When:
Saturday, March 2 | 6 p.m. PST/7 p.m. MST
Where: Salt Lake City, Utah | Jon M. Huntsman Center
Watch: Pac-12 Network | Guy Haberman (PxP) & Don MacLean (Analyst)
Listen: 810 AM & The Varsity Network App | Justin Allegri (PxP)

This is the lone regular-season meeting between the teams. Cal is coming off its first loss in four games and has two contests remaining before the Pac-12 tournament. Utah has struggled down the stretch with losses in six of its past nine games.

The Golden Bears can secure at least a .500 record in conference play with a win at Utah. The last time they finished .500 or better in conference play was the 2016-17 season (10-8).

Cal's Jaylon Tyson is the only major-conference player averaging at least 20.0 points (20.3 PPG), 7.0 rebounds (7.0 RPG) and 3.0 assists (3.3 APG) per game this season, while big man Fardaws Aimaq ranks fourth nationally and leads the Pac-12 with 11.3 rebounds per game.

Utah is led by Branden Carlson (16.2 PPG, 6.9 RPG), Gabe Madsen (13.1 PPG) and Deivon Smith (11.8 PPG).

The Utes have won the last five meetings between the programs.

MBB Game Thread: Cal at Colorado

Cal (13-15, 9-8 Pac-12 | last game: 69-64 win vs. Oregon) at Colorado (18-9, 9-7 | last game: 89-65 win vs. Utah)

When: Thursday, Feb. 28 | 5 p.m. PST
Where: CU Events Center | Boulder, Colorado
TV: Pac-12 Network | Jacob Tobey(PxP) and Mike Montgomery (Analyst)
Radio: 810 AM & The Varsity Network App | Justin Allegri (PxP) & Theo Robertson (Analyst)

Cal is riding a season-best three-game win streak after victories over Washington, Oregon State and Oregon. The Bears wrap up the regular-season with three road games, starting Wednesday at Colorado, where the CU Events Center has not provided many positive memories for Cal. The Bears are 2-14 all-time against the Buffs in Boulder, including six straight losses, and the Buffaloes have been especially good at home this season with a 14-1 mark in their own arena, including a dominant 24-point win over Utah their last time out.

This matchup features two of the top scorers in the Pac-12 as Cal's Jaylon Tyson ranks second in the conference at 20.1 points per game and Colorado's KJ Simpson is third at 19.6 PPG.

Cal won the earlier meeting of the teams this season, 82-78 in Berkeley, with Tyson scoring a game-high 30 points to lead a massive comeback after the Bears trailed by 20 in the first half. It was the program's biggest comeback since 2009. Bears big man Fardaws Aimaq was held to just 6 points and 10 rebounds in that game while fouling out after 24 minutes, as the Buffs provide a tough matchup in the frontcourt with 6-foot-11 senior Eddie Lampkin and 6-foor-9 senior Tristan da Silva. Those two combined for 42 points and 17 rebounds vs. Cal last time.

The Bears are looking to build onto what has been a highly-encouraging debut season for head coach Mark Madsen, as Cal already has its most Pac-12 wins (9) since 2016-17 (10).

ACC MBB home/away pairings released

The ACC has released its home and away pairings for the 2024-25 basketball season just a few minutes ago. The Bears will play Stanford, SMU and NC State home and away next season. Meanwhile, Boston College, Florida State, Miami, Syracuse, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest will all play at Cal.

The Bears will face Clemson, Duke, Georgia Tech, Louisville, North Carolina, Notre Dame and Pittsburgh on the road only in their first ACC season.

A tough draw for Mark Madsen's squad.

Introducing the New Cal Football Major Donor Community

What/When/Where: Cal football has formed a new donor community tailored to us major contributors. This exclusive program offers a diverse array of events and activities, both in-season and offseason. Home-game week events include:
  • Lunches at the football stadium with players and coaches, every Wednesday before every home football game. 7 total.
  • Scheduled tours of the stadium and facilities.
  • Exclusive donor-only practices, followed by presentations from rotating position coaches, every Friday before every home football game. 7 total.
  • Periodic happy hour mixers with coaches and football staff at the Claremont Resort, the team's pre-game headquarters.
Additional offseason activities are in the pipeline and will be announced soon.

These events complement existing major donor benefits, such as traveling with the team to away games, sideline passes for home games, spring coaches’ dinners, premium apparel, invitations to AD suite experiences, Napa coaches retreat, and more.

Why: College football is a battle of budgets. Demonstrated backing from our donor community is vital for Cal football's current success and future relevance. A robust donor network not only sustains the program but also attracts top coaching talent. By investing in our football program, we dispel the narrative that Cal and its alumni don’t care about football. As potential conference realignment looms once again, it's imperative to fortify our resources to ensure the program's resilience, including operational budgets and NIL funding. These donor events aim to increase both contributions and contributors as we transition into the ACC conference next season while offering donors true insider access and enjoyable experiences with the coaches and players. Join us for lunch with Jaydn Ott as his Heisman campaign launches. Sip on a cocktail while talking to Coach Bloesch about his offensive philosophy. Discuss away game travel plans with fellow diehard fans. Hear the latest recruiting news directly from Coach Wilcox.

Who: Invitations are extended to all contributors to the Championship Caliber Fund (which starts at $10k per year). https://www.calathleticsfund.com/cal-football-caliber Additionally, Cal football major donors, including NIL contributors, contributing $10k or more annually, are welcome to attend and learn about the Championship Caliber Fund. As for myself, I'm Steve Hart, a passionate Cal football supporter, donor to both Caliber and NIL, and a dedicated volunteer for the football program. Alongside Kevin Kennedy (California Legends Collective Founder), Adam Brooks (Assistant Athletics Director, Leadership Giving), Anthonia Edgren (Senior Assistant Athletics Director, Development Engagement & Strategy) and Andrew Mcgraw (Chief of Staff, Football), I've been deeply involved in crafting this initiative, drawing inspiration and collaborating with successful donor societies like Notre Dame's.

How: To learn more about the Championship Caliber Fund, reach out to Adam Brooks at 559-389-1853 or email atbrooks@berkeley.edu. For information on the California Legends Collective (NIL), visit https://calegends.com/.

Closing: Cal Athletics is reaffirming its dedication to our football program to ensure immediate success and establish ourselves as a premier program in anticipation of a future conference realignment. The emergence of this new donor community marks a significant stride forward. Within the program, I've witnessed barriers being removed and red tape being cut, paving the way for progress. With 135 distinct donors generously supporting both Caliber and our NIL collective (at $10k annually or above), I urge fellow Bears who have the means to contribute to seize this opportunity. The time for action is now. Let’s show the world who we are.

Donate today, and you'll receive an exclusive invitation to join us for a dinner and a program update by the football coaches on March 6th.
